Robot Cake

Robot Cake

I started drafting a few cake ideas for Robotto Otto’s first birthday when my husband Allen nonchalantly mentioned that I could not make a robot cake without some electronics!  My knowledge of circuits, however, ended with grade school science.

Needless to say, we decided to divide and conquer.   I added the lights into the cake design and Allen headed off to RadioShack.  Allen created a series circuit with three LED’s, two nine volt batteries, a switch, a bunch of wires, a project box, some solder, and a bit of electrical tape.
(he totally wrote this section, see my aforementioned self proclaimed electronic ignorance)
We’re not sure if this is necessarily the best way to create a simple light box, but it definitely worked and we didn’t start a fire!

Once the light box was complete, I simply covered it in fondant, and added it to the cake.  This was a great project to ease into adding electronics to baked goods!  We were really happy with the final result and can’t wait to tackle the next project!

Confession of a *wannabe* foodie:
Sometimes, it is important to decorate the back of a cake… to disguise imperfections in the fondant!

Wow! Perhaps the next cake should speak. It would give Allen a chance to hone is integrated circuit skills.

This cake was just. so. good. I loved all of the details (especially the zero to one meter) and the icing was incredible.

Love the idea of Otto the Robot , but it is a shame that he couldn’t speak.

Hi there. I absolutely love this cake and I know this post is old now but I was wondering how you attached the robot arms and feet to the side of the cake, and on the slight angle that you have them on. Are they square cuts of cake covered in fondant and attached to the sides? So impressive but I really did wonder how you attached them to the main part of the robot body. Please email me. Kindest regards. X

Glad you like the cake! I actually used Rice Krispie treats, covered with icing and then fondant for the arms and legs. I pushed toothpicks halfway through the Rice Krispie treats, along with some buttercream icing, to firmly attach the arms and legs to the body of the cake. Hopefully this helps!! Happy baking/decorating :)
